Portofino is a marvellous Italian location, central to the Riviera Ligure, considered by many one of the world’s eight wonders. It is a small town of no more than five hundreds of people, placed upon its bay, a kind of a natural bowl which has become the world’s most famous Piazzetta (little square). This small gem became famous in the sixties, when the rich and famous characters of the Dolce Vita – actors, actresses, pop stars, and rich aristocrats frequently started visiting it for its twilights, exclusive parties, and breathtaking views.
At the time, the world of the jetsetters was composed by Cortina, Rome, Capri, Saint Tropez, Saint Moritz and of course Portofino: this is where Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor and where visitors of the calibre of world star Madonna come to celebrate their birthday and gather with their friends. Like Positano, which is far to the south, this place is addictive: all who have been here want to return, whether they have visited once or a dozen times, because there is no other spot on earth quite like it. Lunch in Puni, if possible, is a must.
Palm trees, dramatic cliffs overlooking picturesque villages, tulip fields, natural parks and crystal clear, deep water: the Ligurian coast, a stretch that goes from the French border to La Spezia, looks like a movie set. It’s outstandingly different from the Tuscan Riviera nearby, a long path of sandy beaches and coordinated gazebos: this one is wild, beautiful and authentic. The coast collects discerning travellers, photography lovers, hiking and trekking enthusiasts, as well as glamorous owners of yachts who want to avoid the paparazzi crowd of close by Portofino.
Guests who rent in this area will also be able to visit charming towns such as Monaco, Monte Carlo, San Remo, Cannes and Genoa (Genova), the capital of Liguria, a very important port in Italy, a place for design – the world famous architect Renzo Piano is originally from here and has made sure to leave his footstep in the area through magnificent buildings and museums – not to mention the birthplace of Christopher Columbus: such history is today reflected in a number of elegant mansions and religious monuments harmoniously linked here to contemporary buildings. This coast features one of Italy’s prettiest landscapes, also known as the Flower Riviera for the impressive natural explosion of coloured flowers and plants all around.
Together with photographer Klaus Pudel, Mr Agnelli and the world icon Jackie Kennedy, we have learnt Portofino is, simply put, a dispenser of magic: its palette of blues, its pine and olive trees, its tiny harbour have turned this elegant destination into one of the most alluring destinations on the Italian Riviera and in the world. This villa stands high on the hill, overlooking the Piazza (square) and the harbour, offering unparalleled views of the gulf and a magical retro-chic atmosphere: this is the perfect place for all the well-travelled, elegant and Italy connoisseurs.
A unique, marvellous combination: this villa is set on twelve acres of land, high in the hills overlooking the coast while it’s few steps away from the Piazza, the Square of Portofino. It has wonderful, wide-open views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the night-lights of Portofino’s famous port; it offers total privacy and seclusion, and yet its location puts guests a few minutes-walk to the centre of town, a nice variety of shops and restaurants.
Access to the property is incredibly non-traditional, yet fantastic: guests venture 200 meters (656 feet) into a tunnel bored into the sea rock of Portofino, then a lift (elevator) brings guests to the entrance gate, 80 meters (262 feet) up. A pathway through one impressive garden leads to the house built on three levels (approximately 60 stairs). As befits a property of this stature, the interiors have been exquisitely appointed with great furnishings throughout.
Occupying the first floor is the spacious master bedroom, dining room and sitting room. The sitting room is decorated in a serene blue. This leads to the terrace introduced by French doors. The remaining four bedrooms are on the ground floor, opening directly into the garden. Moving on to the yard, there are four different outdoor dining areas, one of which features a beautiful vine-covered gazebo on a plateau.
Guests will undoubtedly use this plateau as a choice vantage point from which to marvel at the Sea of Portofino. There is also a bar carved out from the rock of its natural surroundings. The beautiful areas of lawn and gardens are filled with flowers and trees. The property, due to its position, it’s not recommended for guests with walking difficulties of any sort. A porter service will take care of luggage on arrival and departure
