Umbria region is exquisite, mystical, peaceful, and best of all, unspoiled. Centrally located, this one landlocked region of Italy is often referred to as the green heart of the Country and it is an especially verdant region of mountains, rolling green hills, forests, tumbling rivers, lush farming land, hiking trails, vineyards, and awe inspiring and time transporting views.

Out of Umbria come extraordinary and highly regarded wines, both red and white, olive oils, whole grains, exquisite truffles, first rate prosciutto, sausages and other pork products, honeys, cheeses – and much more. In less two hours time circa visitors can reach Rome or Florence. The splendid mediaeval towns of Perugia, San Francesco town of Assisi with the just restored Giotto paintings of the, Gubbio, Norcia and Cascia as well as the ski station of Forchecanapine and the Trasimeno Lake area all amazing spots and must-see destinations.

The Province of Terni, from the Nera valley to Orvieto is a surprising one, with a rich offer: hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, bordered with green mountains, surrounded by enchanting valleys where nature still reign and creatures of the wood live free, undisturbed by civilization, and some wild areas such as Marmore falls. A complete region, so centrally located to constitute the perfect option for those who want to get the best of Italy in once.

The area where the hamlet is situated is called the Niccone Valley, part of the Upper Tibery Valley, from the Tiber River, which runs through the entire length of the valley for fifty kilometres. The Niccone Valley is named for the stream that flows through it, spilling into the Tiber River at its eastern terminus near Umbertide. Part of the valley is in Umbria and part is in Tuscany; at either end are the Umbrian towns of Lisciano Niccone and plain Niccone, and a small section from Mercatale to La Mita is in Tuscany.

The Upper Tiber Valley is the northernmost Umbrian territory. Wedged between Tuscany and the rugged mountains of the Marches, this region has a unique cultural and social character. The people of this region have been master hunters and gatherers for centuries. Wild mushroom varieties (porcini), tartufo bianco e nero (white and black truffles), cinghiale (wild boar), coniglio (rabbit) are foods typically found on kitchen tables.

The Tiber River runs through the entire length of the valley and provides the valley with great fertility. Still largely farmed with tobacco, each year sees more fields turned over to produce and feed for livestock. There are eight leading towns in the region. The hill towns of Citerna, Montone, Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, and Pietralunga are sleepy hamlets with magnificent views with one or two good places to eat and some memorable art in their local museums and churches.

Their real attractions, however, are the vistas from each town, the joy of the winding drive up to each hilltop location and searching out a place to sample the local food and wine. Citt di Castello, Lisciano Niccone, San Giustino, and Umbertide are valley towns bustling with the energy of daily Italian culture and are the leading towns for art, culture, great restaurants
